Snow Technology

The snow level in the Snow Chamber (snow-covered area of Snow City building) is maintained at 400mm in depth. Up to 150 tons of snow are required to cover the snow grounds and about 10 – 15 tons of snow is made each week to maintain this snow level. The amazing fact is: all this snow is produced on-site using a specially-designed snow gun!

Observe the following snow-making stages:

1. Water is atomized using high-pressure compressed air
2. The water arrives at the snow gun and is pushed out the special nozzles at the end of the barrel
3. Liquid Nitrogen (which freezes at the amazingly low temperature of –196 degrees Celsius) is also passed through the snow gun
4. The extreme cold of the liquid nitrogen snap freezes the atomized water into powder-like snowflakes.

The secret formula?

One ton of liquid nitrogen + one ton of water = one ton of snow!

Snow City is Singapore's first permanent indoor snow centre. A family-centric attraction centre, Snow City receives an average patronage of some 250,000 visitors from around the world!

Launched in June 2000 and revamped in 2007, the Snow City is owned and managed by Snow Venture Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Science Centre Holdings Pte Ltd. It has a three-storey high and 60-metres long snow slope for visitors to snow tube.
It is also popular among locals and tourists who are unable to experience sub-zero temperatures back in homelands.
In November 2012, Snow City welcomed some sub-zero heroes from the world of dinosaurs!
Come face to face with the mammoth, velociraptor, styracosaurus, criorhynchus & its eggs, pterodaustro, dimorphodon, troodon and T-rex, and other extinct species which were all brought back to 'live' by our ice sculptors.

This cool collection of ice sculpting is being housed in the new Ice Gallery whereby visitors to the Snow City can swing by to see before or after their snow play. The new ice exhibition will be a nice educational corner for all children and dinosaurs fans. New educational programmes will be added to make the visit to Snow City and Ice Gallery more complete and fruitful to all visitors.

ADVISORY:
Omni-Theatre will be under renovation from 05 August to 31 October 2013.
The renovation will be an extensive project to bring you an exciting new attraction in the future.

Enrichment Programmes

Snow City adheres to the above educational mantra. Our enrichment programmes cater to both visual and experiential learners. Our main goal is to foster interest in science through the novel experiences offered by the demonstrations and hands-on activities.
These programmes provide a unique experience to the students that cannot be duplicated in ordinary classrooms. Students get to learn all about liquid nitrogen-concepts of force, pressure, effects of cooling, properties of materials, change of state of matter from a temperature of -196oC to room temperature and more!
Do you know the difference between Arctic and Antarctic poles? Or that penguins and polar bears never exist in the same pole? Come and discover all these fun facts at Little Winter Wonders, our hands-on programme designed by Make*Believe for children 3 to 6 years old to explore such knowledge.

Available Programmes: Little Winter Wonders (3 to 6 years old)
Description:		5 stations are set up with respective learning objectives embedded in each activity. Accompanying teachers will be given a Teachers' Guide to facilitate their session with the children. The planned activities promote a holistic learning approach to encourage active learners to learn through play and develop environmental awareness.
Mode of Delivery:		Classroom session with Educator provided
Topics:		Environmental awareness, usages of energy in a cooling system, temperature, different states of water, habitat, friction, creativity and design concepts
Fun with Liquid Nitrogen (11 to 18 years old)
Description:		This class is recommended for those who attend low-temperature science programmes for the first time. The programme involves several demonstrations that showcase the properties of liquid nitrogen. Students will be awed by liquid nitrogen as it smokes, expands and evaporates. The ability for liquid nitrogen to readily freeze objects will definitely amaze students.

Topics:		Force, pressure, effects of cooling, properties of materials, change of state of matter, temperature
Ice-Cream Making (3 and above)
Description:		Students will learn about the history of ice-cream and the different ingredients used in making ice-cream. Our instructor will take them through the various techniques used in making ice-cream. The focus will be on the use of liquid nitrogen. Students will then get into groups to make their own ice-cream and enjoy their own creations later!
Mode of Delivery:		Lecture demonstration and hands-on activity
Topics:		Transfer of heat, effects of heat exchange and properties of matter in different temperatures
Winter Olympics (8 and above)
Description:		An instinctively enjoyable programme fit for anyone that just wants to have a roaring good time. Conducted exclusively in the Snow Chamber, the Winter Olympic is a culmination of carefully tailored activities that challenges the mind while testing your physical agility. It is a programme catered to the young and the young at heart.
